Slow Start Dooms Blue Lacrosse Against Scranton

Box Score

CLERMONT, Fla. -- A 4-0 deficit after 15 minutes of play doomed the Wellesley College lacrosse team as the Blue dropped a 10-7 decision to the University of Scranton at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.  The loss, the first of the season for Wellesley, sets the Blue's season record to 4-1.  The Royals improve to 4-2 on the year.

Scranton opened the scoring early in the first half, as Kaela Mahon scored twice and Jilliana DePaolera and Caroline Pryor also added scores to bring the Royals lead to 4-0 midway through the first period.

Wellesley finally broke through in the 12th minute, as Meredith Roy scored on a pass from Allison Robbins.  The goal would spark a first-half comeback from the Blue, as they went on to add goals from Jenny Holland and Kate Lonergan to cut the Scranton lead to 4-3. The Royals, however, scored with :15 seconds remaining in the half, to go into the break with a 5-3 advantage.

The second half started much like the first, with Scranton taking control.  The Royals again opened with four unanswered goals, building a 9-3 lead with 13:08 remaining in the game.  Once again, however, Wellesley fought back, as the Blue got goals from Meagan Fuchs and Jenny Holland to bring the score to 9-5 with 7:29 left to play.

Scranton got one back at 4:49 with a goal from Mahon to increase their lead to 10-5. Wellesley again tried to mount a comeback, with scores from Britt Mscisz at 4:25 and Roy at 3:58, but the early deficit proved to be too much to overcome, and the Blue fell to Scranton, 10-7.

Roy led the Blue with two goals and an assist, while Robbins added three helpers and Holland added two goals. In net for the Blue, Mary Mattia had a solid game, making a season-high 17 saves.

Robbins also led the Blue with three caused turnovers and three ground balls, while Fuchs and Alyssa Andres each added two draw controls.

Wellesley is back in action on their spring break trip on Thursday, taking on Southern Maine at 10:00am.
