Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College lacrosse team used a balanced offensive attack to take down Mount Holyoke, 12-7, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams. The Blue improve their record to 6-1 overall, while the Lyons drop to 3-4.
Wellesley was paced by three goals from Meredith Roy, while Allison Robbins, Jenny Holland, Britt Msisz and Kate Lonergan all added two goals each. Elizabeth Clementson picked up the other Wellesley tally, while Alyssa Andres, Holland, Mscisz and Robbins each added solo assists in the win.
The Blue also got a solid all-around game from Kayla Bolton, who recorded game-highs of five ground balls and five draw controls. Also for the Blue, Roy and Andres each posted two caused turnovers, with Roy also recording four ground balls. In net for Wellesley, Mary Mattia made eight saves to earn the win.
Mount Holyoke's offense was led by two goals each from Vika Planson and Alex Crean. Brianne Phelan and Katya Planson added solo scores for the Lyons.
Bombard and Lindsey Kanno each tallied three ground balls, while Georgia Markell and Liz Randolph both picked up two draw controls. In net for the Lyons, Jamie Theophilos got the start, making five saves, while Melissa Saale made two saves, without allowing a goal in 11 minutes of action.
Wellesley jumped out to a 4-0 advantage with two goals from Robbins and a goal each from Roy and Lonergan. Mount Holyoke got on the board with a score from Bombard in the 17th minute, before Holland and Mscisz extended Wellesley's advantage to 6-1 with 8:44 remaining. The Lyons crept back in the game with the final two scores of the first half, as Vika Planson and Crean set the halftime score to 6-3.
The teams traded goals to start the second half, before the Blue scored five unanswered goals to break open the game with a 12-4 advantage with 16:12 to play. Mount Holyoke made things interesting with three tallies before the five-minute mark, but Wellesley hung on for the 12-7 victory.
Wellesley held a 25-18 advantage in shots and a 21-17 lead in ground balls. Draw controls also went to the Blue, by a 12-9 margin.
Wellesley is back in action on Thursday, hosting Endicott for a 4:30pm non-conference tilt. Mount Holyoke next hosts Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday at 4:30pm.
