Box Score EXETER, N.H. -- Senior Jenny Holland's seven goals led the Wellesley College lacrosse team to a convincing 21-11 win over the University of New England on Saturday afternoon at Phillips Exeter Academy. The game was the season opener for both teams.
Wellesley opened the game strong, as three goals from Holland and two each from junior Meredith Roy and first-year Britt Mscisz, led the Blue to an 8-1 advantage. UNE battled back, however, scoring six of the period's final five goals to close the Blue advantage to 10-6 at the break.
Wellesley opened the second half with three straight goals, as Holland, Meagan Fuchs and Allison Robbins each dented the scoreboard for the Blue. UNE again made a comeback, scoring two straight to cut the lead to 13-8, still in favor of Wellesley. However, the Blue broke away for good in the final 20 minutes of the half, closing the game on an 8-3 win to seal the 21-11 victory.
After Holland's seven scores, Robbins led the Blue with six points on two goals and four assists, while Mscisz was solid in her collegiate debut, with five points (four goals, one assist). Also on the offensive side for the Blue, Kate Lonergan tallied three goals and an assist, while Roy added three points and Fuchs tallied two.
Alyssa Andres and Elizabeth Clemetson led the defense with three ground balls each, while Roy added six draw controls and two caused turnovers. In goal for the Blue, Mary Mattia picked up seven saves to earn the victory.
Wellesley opens its home slate on Tuesday at 4:00pm hosting Roger Williams.
