Second Half Surge Powers Blue Lacrosse Past Roger Williams

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College lacrosse team used a solid second half effort to post an 11-6 victory over Roger Williams University in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. The win lifts Wellesley to a 2-0 start, while the Hawks faltered in their season opener.

A tight first-half saw visitors taking an early lead, as Claire Halliday scored the game's opener on an assist from Jessica Searl. The goal pushed Halliday into sole possession of the program record for career points. Roger Williams increased their advantage to 2-0 with a goal from Danica Delia at 26:15.

Wellesley responded with five unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead midway through the period. The Blue benefited from two scores from Meagan Fuchs and solo scores from Britt Mscisz, Allison Robbins and Meredith Roy.

Roger Williams cut the Wellesley advantage to 5-4 on two straight scores from Halliday, but Roy took one back for the Blue sending the game into the break with Wellesley holding on to a slim 6-4 lead.

Wellesley broke the game open early in the second half, increasing the lead to 9-4 on scores from Robbins, Mscisz and Jenny Holland. The Hawks would snap their 18-minute scoring drought with a goal from Delia at 18:22, but the Blue scored two out of the game's final three goals to seal the 11-6 victory.

Wellesley was led by Roy who recorded four points on three goals and an assist, while also collecting six draw controls. Mscisz tallied two goals and one assist to go along with a game-high seven ground balls. Rounding out the offense, Fuchs notched three goals, Robbins recorded two, and Holland added a solo score.

Defensively, Blue goalie Mary Mattia recorded 10 saves, allowing only two second half goals against 11 shots faced. Elizabeth Clemetson added two caused turnovers in the defensive effort for the Blue.

For Roger Williams, Halliday recorded a game-high four goals, taking her career total to 222 points (163 goals, 59 assists). Delia added two scores, while Danielle Neagle posted four draw controls and Kesley Adams scooped up three ground balls. Meagan Connelly was solid in goal for the Hawks, recording 13 saves, including eight in the second half.

Wellesley continues a three-game home stand with a 12:00pm non-conference match-up against Lasell on Saturday.  Roger Williams is back in action on Friday, traveling to Willimantic, Conn., for a 4:00pm game at Eastern Connecticut State.
