Wheaton Hands Wellesley Lacrosse 12-10 Setback

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wheaton College goalkeeper Marianna Marcellino posted 12 second half saves as the visiting Lyons lacrosse team handed Wellesley College a 12-10 setback in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on a rainy and cold Tuesday.

The win improves the Lyons to 6-9 overall, 3-2 in NEWMAC play. Wellesley drops to 8-6 and 2-3 in the NEWMAC.

Rebounding from a slow start that saw her post only two first half saves, Marcellino's second half performance gave her 14 total stops for the game. The senior saved the final four free-position shots she faced, holding Wellesley to just 2-for-6 from eight meters.

The teams were virtually even in most major stat categories; with Wellesley holding on to advantages in shots (34-31) and ground balls (17-13), while Wheaton led in draw controls (12-11). However, the Lyons turned the ball over just seven times, including only giving it up three times in the second half to cement the 12-10 victory.

Hailey Colburn led Wheaton with four goals and an assist, while Tess Meyer scored twice and added a helper. Leila Mills recorded two goals and an assist, while Charlotte DeSantis tallied two assists. Rounding out the scoring for the Lyons, Hannah Ferris, Katie Powers and Kristen Palmer all added solo scores.

Also for Wheaton, Devon Soucier sparked the offense with five draw controls, while Sydney Ferguson added two. Amy Moreira caised two turnovers, while Marcellino led the Lyons with three ground balls.

Wellesley was paced by five goals from Britt Mscisz and four from Jenny Holland. Allison Robbins rounded out the offense with a goal and three assists.

Elizabeth Clemetson led the Blue with five draw controls, while Meredith Roy recorded two. Meagan Fuchs scooped three ground balls, while in goal, Mary Mattia made 16 total saves.

The game was tight the entire way, as the teams traded goals until it was 4-4 with 7:47 left in the first half. Wheaton, however, scored three straight, two from Colburn, to make it 7-4 with 3:30 on the clock. The Lyons looked to take the three-goal lead into the break, but Wellesley's Holland scored off a slick pass from Robbins as time expired to make it 7-5.

Wellesley erased the deficit early in the second, knotting the game at 7-7, just six minutes into the half. Once again, the teams traded goals with Wellesley finally taking a 9-8 lead at the 19-minute mark. However, the Lyons then went on a run, scoring four in a row to open up a 12-9 advantage with 5:15 to play. The Blue would add a score two minutes later, but Wheaton won the ensuing draw and played keep-away to seal the victory.

Wellesley is back in action on Saturday in the regular season finale against Babson at noon. Wheaton returns to the field on Thursday with a non-conference tilt against Tufts at 4:30pm.
