Box Score WELLESLEY, Mass. – After thirty-five minutes of play, the Babson College women's lacrosse team used a dominating second half run to turn a 4-4 tie into a 19-5 victory, defeating Wellesley on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
The win lifts the Beavers to 8-7 overall, with a 5-1 record in NEWMAC play. The loss sets the Blue's season mark to 8-7, 2-4 in the NEWMAC.
Babson struck first in the contest, before Wellesley scored three straight to take a 3-1 with lead 17 minutes remaining in the half. However, the Beavers closed out the stanza with three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 advantage into the break.
Wellesley quickly tied things at 4-4, as Britt Mscisz scored for the Blue, just 43 seconds into the half. From that point on, however, Babson took over. The Beavers closed out play with a 15-1 run, dominating the final 25 minutes of the game.
Leading the way for Babson, Trisha Babson posted a seven-point game, compiling two goals and five assists. Jamie Sprang had a game-high five goals, while Ellen McCurdy and Colleen Mulligan each scored four times with an assist. Rounding out the offense for the Beavers, Alyssa Hood picked up two goals and an assist, while Morgan Lockwood scored twice.
On the draw for the visitors, Hood and Babson each controlled five, while McCurdy added four. Babson and Erin Daley each scooped three ground balls for the Beavers, while Daley caused three turnovers. Sarah Macary picked up 13 total saves in the contest, including 10 in the first half.
For Wellesley, Mscisz finished the game with three goals, while Meagan Fuchs added a goal and an assist. Meredith Roy scored once, while Allison Robbins picked up an assist. Rounding out the box score, Fuchs controlled three draws, Robbins caused four turnovers and Kaitlyn Kirkaldy added four ground balls.
In goal for the Blue, Mary Mattia picked up 11 saves.
The win locks up the #2 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC playoffs for Babson. The Beavers will play the to-be-determined #3 seed on Saturday at #1 Springfield. Wellesley will await results from around the conference to learn its playoff fate.
Before the game, Wellesley honored the class of 2011: Jenny Holland, Nicole Labbee and Mary Mattia. The senior class has compiled 33 total wins in their four years at Wellesley, leading the team to the NEWMAC finals in 2008 and the semifinals in 2009.
