Wheaton Tops Blue Lacrosse in NEWMAC Quarters

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College lacrosse team saw their season come to an end in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament quaterfinals, as the #5 Blue dropped a 10-5 game at the hands of #4 Wheaton.

Wheaton, which edged the Blue last week in Wellesley, improved to 7-11 and will travel to top seed Springfield College on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. start.  Wellesley finishes its season with an 8-8 mark.

Senior goalie Marianna Marcellino led the Lyons with nine stops, including turning aside seven shots in the second half.  Junior Hailey Colburn and first-year Leila Mills recorded two goals and one assist each, while junior Chelsea McLeod scored twice.

For the visitors, senior Jenny Holland notched a pair of goals, and junior Meredith Roy added a marker and an assist.  Sophomores Allison Robbins and Meagan Fuchs each added solo scores in the loss.

On the other side of the ball, senior Mary Mattia made nine stops for Wellesley, while senior Nicole Labbee caused three turnovers and added three ground balls.

Wheaton, which won all nine first-half draw controls and the game's initial 12, tallied the contest's first three goals by the 15:26 mark of the opening stanza.  After the Blue made the score 3-1 at 14:11, Colburn won the ensuing draw and marched down the field for her second tally of the afternoon.

Wheaton's Mills then notched her second marker of the frame to extended the Lyon lead to 5-1, before the teams each traded goals in the final five minutes of the period, leaving the halftime score at 6-2.

A Wheaton goal 26 seconds into the second half provided the Lyons with their largest lead up to that point at 7-2.  The Lyons then tried to play keepway with the ball, stalling for large periods of time in the second half.

Wellesley, however, was not done, as the Blue started a mini-comeback with pressure on the Wheaton keeper.  Holland then added back-to-back scores, while a goal from Robbins made it 7-5 with 8:22 remaining. Once again, Wheaton responded though, as solid play off the draw led to three unanswered goals to seal the 10-5 win.
