Mattia Leads Blue Lacrosse to 16-10 Win Over Eastern Conn.

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley goalkeeper Mary Mattia recorded a season-high 18 saves to lead the Blue lacrosse team to a 16-10 victory over Eastern Connecticut State in non-conference action on Wednesday.

Eastern outshot Wellesley 33-25, but Mattia was the difference-maker, as the senior posted 10 of her saves in the second half. The win lifts the Blue to 7-3 overall, while Eastern falls to 2-5.

Wellesley's offense was keyed by five goals and an assist from Jenny Holland and four goals and two helpers from Meredith Roy. Britt Mscisz added three goals and an assist, while Allison Robbins added two goals and three assists. Rounding out the offense, Meagan Fuchs and Kate Lonergan each added two points.

The Blue defense was led by Nicole Labbee and Alyssa Andres who each picked up three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Kayla Bolton also added a pair of caused turnovers.

The Warriors were paced by a five-goal performance from Daniela Marchitto, while Taylor Buchanan added three scores. Christine Lillis and Ashley Prizio rounded out the offense with two points each.

Defensively, Megan Barrett and Christine Lillis eached scooped four ground balls, while Marchitto and Samantha Barone added two caused turnovers apiece. In goal for Eastern, Nancy Ibrahim posted six saves.

The first half was tightly played, as Wellesley and Eastern matched each other goal for goal until the score was knotted at 4-4 with 17:52 remaining. However, the Blue closed the half with a 5-2 run to open up a 9-6 advantage at the break. Wellesley's Holland scored four straight to close the half.

The Blue carried the momentum into the second period, scoring the first three goals in the stanza to open up a 12-6 advantage. Eastern answered with three of their own, two from Marchitto, closing the gap to 12-9. However, the hosts ended the game on a 4-1 run to seal the 16-10 victory.

Wellesley returns to NEWMAC play on Saturday, traveling to Springfield for a 1:00pm game. Eastern next hosts Little East rival Keene State on Saturday at 1:00pm.
