Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Visiting Wellesley College got 15 kills from Sydney Carfagno to post a 3-0 (20-25, 23-25, 13-25) win over Smith College in the regular season New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) finale for both teams.
Wellesley improves to 27-4, with a perfect 9-0 NEWMAC record and will be the #1 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament. Smith ends its season with a 7-19 record, and 3-6 in the NEWMAC.
Smith got a nine kill, .563 hitting performance from first year Mei-Li Smith, while adding 11 assists and eight digs. Bethany Ashworth added 14 assists and five digs.
Carfagno led the Blue's offense with her 15 kills and a .481 hitting percentage, while also picking up three aces. Isabel Custodio hit .400 with eight kills and 16 assists, while Jessica Mullen and Caitlin Laughlin each had four kills.
The Blue also got 20 assists and two service aces from Hilary Ayers, as well as 20 digs and three service aces from Vivian Hu. Kira Jordan led the Blue at the net with two blocks.
As the number one seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament, Wellesley earned the right to host the semifinals and finals next Saturday and Sunday.
NEWMAC Quarterfinals begin on Tuesday, with third-seeded MIT battling sixth-seeded Babson College and fourth-seeded Coast Guard Academy taking on fifth-seed, WPI. Wellesley will play the winner of the Coast Guard/WPI game, while second-seeded Springfield will take on the winner of the MIT/Babson contest.
