Box Score BOSTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season, cruising to an 18-5 non-conference victory over Simmons on Wednesday evening. The Blue move to 1-3 on the season, while the Sharks move to 1-2.
Wellesley outshot the Sharks 30-14 and won 18 of 25 draw controls to complete the dominating effort.
Wellesley jumped out to a 3-0 lead on two goals from Allison Robbins and a score from Claire Canty before the Sharks' Lee Sutherland and Rachel Wallace cut the lead to 3-2. Wellesley bounced back with free position goals from Robbins and Nathalie Gruet and Canty found the back of the net again to increase the lead to 6-2.
Simmons added a score from Meaghan Maurice to narrow the gap to 6-3 with 11:31 remaining in the half, but the Blue closed out the period with five unanswered goals to take an 11-3 lead into the break.
Wellesley continued their scoring barrage into the second half, scoring the first six goals to put the game out of reach. The teams traded goals near the end of the half, but the Blue lead proved to be too much and Wellesley came away with the 18-5 victory.
Canty finished the evening with five goals, while Kate Lonergan added four. Robbins picked up three scores, while Roy and Gruet each added two goals to round out the offense.
Defensively, Roy tallied nine draw controls and Kaitlyn Kirkaldy added two caused turnovers. In goal, Tori Hysko got the start, playing the first 37 minutes and making three saves before giving way to Tya Logan who closed out the victory with two saves.
Simmons returns to the field on March 17th at 12:00 p.m. when they travel to Emmanuel College to open Great Northeast Athletic Conference play. Wellesley travels to Drew on March 19th for a 4:30 p.m. start.
