Wellesley Lacrosse Downs MIT, 22-14

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Brit Mscisz scored seven goals, leading the Wellesley College lacrosse team to a 22-14 victory over MIT in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday afternoon in Wellesley. The win lifts the Blue to 2-1 in the NEWMAC, 4-8 overall, while the Engineers dip to 0-3 in NEWMAC play, 2-9 overall.

Wellesley scored seven of the game's final nine goals, breaking open a tight 15-12 contest. Mscisz found the back of the net three times during the stretch, as the Blue jumped into a tie for second place in the NEWMAC.

Although Wellesley scored first, MIT took the early advantage, opening a 4-1 lead on two goals from Katie Kauffman and one each from Emma Kane and Laura Wacker. The Blue stormed back, scoring the next four goals, as Nathalie Gruet tied the game at 4-4 and Mscisz put Wellesley ahead 5-4 with a marker at 12:34.

MIT knotted the game at 5-5 as Wacker picked up an unassisted score at 11:54. The Blue then went on a 4-1 scoring run, taking a 9-6 lead with 6:32 to play in the half. Mscisz scored twice during the Blue spurt, while Allison Robbins and Rachel Hanscom each added tallies.

The teams then traded scores two scores each over the final five minute of the half, sending Wellesley into the break with an 11-8 advantage.

Wellesley opened the second half with a score from Robbins, increasing the lead to 12-8. MIT fired back, with goals from Anna Teruya and Lyndsay Muri, trimming the margin to 12-10. Again, Wellesley answered, with three straight goals, two from Claire Canty and one from Meredith Roy, taking a 15-10 lead with 21:23 to play.

MIT would get back-to-back scores from Wacker, cutting the lead to 15-12 at the 18:42 mark, but Wellesley took over, scoring seven of the game's final nine goals to seal the 22-14 victory.

Overall, Wellesley held advantages in shots (40-31), draw controls (20-17), and ground balls (22-16).

Mscisz led all scorers with eight points on seven goals and an assist for the Blue, while Robbins added seven points on four goals and three helpers. Roy finished the afternoon with two goals and three assists, while Gruet recorded a three-point game. Rounding out the offense, Canty, Hanscom, and Sierra Michaelson, each scored twice for Wellesley.

Roy picked up seven draw controls and three ground balls to lead the Blue. Kaitlyn Kirkaldy paced the defense with two caused turnovers, while also recording three draw controls and four ground balls. In goal, Tya Logan got the start, playing 44 minutes, while making eight saves. Tori Hysko played the final 16 minutes between the pipes, recording four stops.

MIT was led by Kauffman and Wacker, who both turned in outstanding all around performances. Wacker led the offense with four goals and three assists, while adding four draw controls, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Kauffman scored four goals, recorded a game-high eight draw controls, and added two caused turnovers.

Rounding out the box score, Molly McShane had three draw controls, two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Elizabeth Dethy led the team with four ground balls. In goal, Sarah Ritter had a solid game, picking up 12 saves.

Wellesley continues its NEWMAC slate, hosting Smith on Saturday at 12:00pm and celebrating Senior Day before the game. MIT plays non-conference opponent Keene State on the road on Thursday at 4:00pm.
