Field Hockey Posts 4-1 Victory Over Gordon

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley's Emily Lewis scored twice while Nanaki Atal added two assists, as the Blue field hockey team posted a 4-1 victory over visiting Gordon College in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon. The win improves Wellesley to 5-1 overall, while Gordon dips to 1-6.

Wellesley held leads in both shots (15-8) and penalty corners (13-6), putting up three first half goals in the win.

Lewis scored her first goal 14 minutes into the contest, threading a shot through the legs of the keeper after a corner insertion from Atal. Seven minutes later, Atal connected with Allison Robbins, who ripped a ball from the right side on a corner for a 2-0 Wellesley advantage.

Lewis made it 3-0 Wellesley in the 29th minute, tapping a loose ball into the back of the cage. The goal was her second of the game, and her seventh of the season.

Gordon got one back with four minutes to play in the first half. Karli Balmer scored on a breakaway, pulling the Blue keeper out of position and then hitting the back right side of the cage. Balmer's score cut the Wellesley lead to 3-1.

The Blue's Lallie Lukens recorded the only goal in the second half for either team. After a hard shot from Kaitlyn Kirkaldy, Lukens deflected the ball for a 4-1 Blue advantage.

Gordon had a solid scoring opportunity in the 69th minute, but a defensive save from the Blue's Olivia Dumont sealed the 4-1 win for Wellesley.

In goal for the Blue, Brit Mscisz picked up the win, making three saves in 57 minutes of work. Becky Hamilton came on in relief, tallying 13 scoreless minutes.

For Gordon, Anna Bury got the start, making four stops in 57 minutes. Abigail Lutz played the final 13 minutes.

Gordon returns to action on Saturday, September 22, when they travel to the University of New England for a 12pm CCC match up. Wellesley will take the field on Saturday at 1pm, with a NEWMAC game against Wheaton at Faxon Field in Rehoboth.
