Blue Soccer Falls To Nationally Ranked Brandeis

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College soccer team dropped a non-league game at home on Monday, falling 1-0 to Brandeis. The Judges, ranked fourth in New England and 24th nationally, improve their record to 8-1, while the Blue fall to 4-4-1.

Brandeis scored the game's only goal 15:41 into the game and made it stand up on its way to the win. First-year forward Holly Szafran scored the goal after Wellesley keeper Kat Goldsmith made the initial save on sophomore Alec Spivack. Szafran gathered the rebound and netted her fourth of the season.

Wellesley had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the 25th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick. Unfortunately the shot went wide and the Judges maintained their one-goal advantage. Goldsmith ended the first half with three saves, while Francine Kofinas of Brandeis made five stops.

Wellesley turned up the heat in the second half, holding a 10-4 shots advantage. Brandeis goalkeeper Michelle Savuto saw five of those shots on goal in the final 45 minutes, turning them all aside to preserve the 1-0 victory.

Sophomore Claire Cerda made a pair of second half saves for the Blue, who return to action on Saturday when they host Smith at 12:30 in a NEWMAC contest.
