UMass Boston Snaps Blue Volleyball's Win Streak

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Visiting UMass Boston snapped the Wellesley College volleyball team's 14-game win streak, with a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Blue in front of a packed house on Homecoming at the Keohane Sports Center. The Beacons grabbed the match with set scores of 25-19, 23-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13 to improve to 10-5 on the season, while Wellesley's record now stands at 14-1.

UMass Boston took game one, building an 11-5 advantage on long serving runs from Molly Witzman and Megan Pollock. The Beacons then stretched their lead to 19-9 after a Wellesley attack error. The Blue hung around, inching back into the game with a six point run of their own, cutting the lead to five points with Vivian Hu on the line. UMass Boston then closed out the set, notching the clincher on a kill from Corrine Porter.

Wellesley controlled set two early on, building a 10-3 edge backed by strong serving from Hu and three kills from Jessica Mullen. The Beacons responded, using kills from Shannon Thompson with Witzman on the service line, cutting the Wellesley lead to 17-15. After the teams traded sideouts, Wellesley got three straight points with Isabel Custodio on the line and then ended the set with a kill from Caitlin Laughlin

Wellesley came out on top of set three after another back-and-forth battle. The Blue opened with a 9-3 edge and then held that six point advantage until late in the set. UMass Boston rallied with Brooke Nemethy on the line, but Wellesley closed things out on a block from Lindsey Menichella and Custodio to take a 2-1 match lead.

The Beacons opened set four on a tear, as Witzman's serving again led them to an early 10-3 advantage. Wellesley then used an 8-0 run, and strong serving from Sydney Carfagno to take over the lead, inching up, 11-10. UMass Boston responded, as kills from Thompson let the team regain a 16-14 edge. Wellesley made a late bid to tie the match, coming to within three at 23-20, but a Thompson kill gave the Beacons the set and a 2-2 match tie.

In the fifth and final set, Wellesley was the first to the switch, using serving runs from Traci Hamanaka and Hu to take a slight 8-6 edge. After sideouts, a kill from UMass Boston's Amber Clemons knotted the match at 9-9. Wellesley responded with kills from Kira Jordan to open a 12-9 lead, but the Beacons would not go away. After a Porter kill, she took to the serving line, helping the visitors take a 13-12 lead. Wellesley knotted the game at 13-13, but couldn't finish, as a block from Witzman and Briana Sousa sealed the set and match win for the Beacons.

Thompson led the Beacons with 18 kills, 15 digs, and seven blocks. Kirsten Morrison added nine kills and five blocks, while Clemons tallied eight kills on 15 attempts and no errors. Sousa led all players with 11 block assists and one solo stuff, as the Beacons out-blocked Wellesley 16 to six. Kayla Wilson anchored the backcourt for the visitors, racking up 23 digs. Emma Rocha and Megan Pollack combined for 44 assists in the win.

For the Blue, Custodio notched a triple-double, with 18 kills, 26 assists and 11 digs, while Carfagno recorded 17 kills, 16 digs, and three aces. Laughlin recorded eight kills and three blocks, and Hu tallied 30 digs to lead all players. Rounding out the stat leaders for Wellesley, Hilary Ayers recorded 22 assists and Hamanaka picked up 10 digs.

The Beacons return to action on Tuesday, October 2, when the host Tufts University at 7pm at Boston College High School. The Blue will celebrate Homecoming on Saturday, Sept 29, when they host Eastern Nazarene at 11am and Emerson College at 3pm.
