Wellesley Lacrosse Doubles Up on Lasell; Blue Top Lasers 14-7

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Led by 10 points from sophomore Claire Canty, the Wellesley College lacrosse team doubled up on visiting Lasell College, topping the Lasers, 14-7, on Sunday afternoon in Wellesley. The win lifts the Blue to 2-1 overall, while Lasell evens its record at 1-1.

Canty had a career day, recording college-bests in points (10), goals (6) and assists (4), leading Wellesley's potent offensive attack.

The Blue scored the first eight goals of the contest, building the 8-0 edge through the first 18 minutes of play. Canty connected four times during the run, while senior Meredith Roy added two goals and an assist to spark Wellesley.

Lasell finally broke through on the scoreboard with two straight scores late in the half. Senior Ashley Slattery and sophomore Caitlyn Brecher each added unassisted goals to cut the lead to 8:20 with 9:13 to play. Wellesley responded by sandwiching scores from first-year Nicole DeCanio and Canty around a goal from Lasell's Ashley Pechulis, to take a 10-3 edge into the break.

Wellesley initiated the second half offense six minutes into play, as sophomore Meghan Peterson scored her second of the season. Lasell then got two back, as Slattery converted on a free-position attempt and first-year Bridget Doherty scored on as assist from Slattery, making it 11-5 with 20 minutes to play.

Lasell threatened late in the game, winning a string of three straight draw controls, but scores from Slattery and senior Rebecca Stanton were countered with goals from the Blue's Canty, DeCanio and Roy, setting the final to 14-7, Wellesley.

In addition to 10 points from Canty and four from Roy, Wellesley's offense was bolstered by two points each from DeCanio (2 goals), junior Brit Mscisz (1 goal, 1 assist), and senior Elizabeth Clemetson (2 assists). Peterson and senior Allison Robbins also added goals for the Blue, who only out-shot Lasell 22-19, but made the most of it, connecting on 14 of 22 attempts.

Roy led Wellesley with four draw controls, while Robbins added three ground balls. Junior Nicole Hatem recorded two caused turnovers and two ground balls, while Peterson also had two ground balls. In goal for the Blue, junior Tya Logan recorded nine saves, while adding three ground balls.

For Lasell, Slattery finished with three goals and an assist for four total points. She also added a game-high seven draw controls to go along with two ground balls. Junior Britney Wuorio had two points, both coming from assists, while Doherty, Pechulis, Stanton and Brecher added solo scores.

Defensively, first-year Lisi Anczok led the team with two caused turnovers, while also adding two ground balls. In goal for Lasell, first-year Sammy Long played 44 minutes, recording two saves, while sophomore Michaela Doughty added a save in 16 minutes of work.

Wellesley is back in action on Wednesday, March 13th, playing at Emerson at 6:00pm. Lasell next plays Tuesday, March 12th, traveling to Nichols for a 4:00pm start.
