BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Junior Brit Mscisz recorded seven points, including the game-winning goal in overtime, as the Wellesley College lacrosse team opened the 2013 season with a thrilling 12-11 victory on the road at the University of New England.

Mscisz and sophomore Claire Canty each ended the game with five goals, with Mscisz also recording two assists. Canty added one helper, which came on the  game-winning goal. Junior goalkeeper Tori Hysko recorded 13 saves, including two in the overtime period, to cement the victory.

Wellesley opened play with the first two goals of the game, both coming from Canty. UNE responded with two of their own from Hanna Tavella before the Blue's Allison Robbins made it 3-2 Wellesley with 16:49 to play in the half.

The Nor'easters, however, took over in the last 10 minutes of the half, scoring four unanswered goals, to take a 6-3 lead into the break.

The visitors quickly turned things around in the opening minutes of the second half, as Wellesley scored four times in the first 12 minutes to take over a 7-6 lead. Mscisz scored twice, while Canty and sophomore Meghan Peterson also scored for the Blue.

After the teams traded goals to make it 8-7 Wellesley, UNE scored two straight to take a 9-8 advantage with 9:53 to play. The Blue then went on a mini run, scoring three of the next four goals to take a slim, 11-10 lead with 6:30 to play.

UNE managed a score with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game, knotting it at 11-11 and sending it into the extra frame.

In the overtime period, Mscisz scored her game-winner off Canty's assist midway through the first session. Hysko then stood tall in goal for the Blue, wrapping up the victory.

Mscisz and Canty accounted for 10 of the Wellesley's 12 goals, with Peterson and Robbins adding the other two scores. Senior Meredith Roy rounded out the Blue's offense with two assists and six draw controls.

Defensively, Roy and junior Kaitlyn Kirkaldy each recorded two caused turnovers, while first-year Caitlin Crawford picked up five ground balls.

For UNE, Tavella and Gina Newsome each recorded five-point efforts, with Tavella scoring four times and adding an assist, while Newsome recorded three goals and two helpers. Nikki Smith picked up three goals for the hosts and Tavella added three draw controls.

Defensively for UNE, Johanna Currier had a game-high four caused turnovers, while adding five ground balls. In goal, Courtney Kendall made six saves.

Wellesley is back in action on Wednesday hosting Endicott at 4:00pm. UNE returns to play on Thursday, traveling to Southern Maine for a 3:30pm start.
