Wellesley Softball Splits on Final Day of Spring Trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wellesley College softball team earned a split in their final day of action at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. The Blue opened the day with a 9-1 win over New England College before dropping a 3-1 game to Calvin College.

Wellesley ends its spring trip with a 4-4 record.

In game one, the Blue pounded out 11 hits en route to a 9-1 mercy-rule victory over New England College. Four Wellesley players recorded multi-hit games on the day, while first-year Amber Braun recorded her first career victory in the circle.

Wellesley broke the game open with four five runs in the bottom of the second inning, and added four in the bottom of the fourth. New England College picked up a run in the top of the fifth, but it wasn't enough to extend the game and the Blue nabbed the 9-1 victory in five innings.

Offensively, Kimberly Cabral, Abby Casey, Elizabeth Murphy and Jennifer Migliore, all recorded two hits each. Cabral and Ellis added a pair of RBI each, while Emilyrose Havrilla and Migliore also drove in runs.

Braun pitched all five innings for the Blue, earning the victory. She allowed just four hits and one run, unearned, while striking out eight.

In game two, Wellesley's Lindsay Johnson had a solid outing in the circle and the Blue out-hit Calvin, but couldn't string together enough offense in the 3-1 loss.

Wellesley got on the board first, as a Lauren Goldfarb single scored Maria LaBouyer in the top of the first. The Blue held the 1-0 lead until the bottom of the third, when Calvin plated a pair on a single to center. Both runs were unearned.

Calvin then stretched their lead to 3-1 with another unearned run in the bottom of the sixth. Wellesley made some noise in the top of the seventh with a single from Havrilla, but a fly out and a strike out ended the Blue threat.

Mara Blesoff finished the game 3-3 with a double, while LaBouyer added a pair of hits in the loss. Johnson threw six strong innings, allowing just four hits.

Wellesley is back in action on Sunday, opening its NEWMAC schedule with a doubleheader against WPI, played at Assumption College.
