Blue Softball Fights Rain to Top WPI

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College softball team topped WPI, 6-3, in a NEWMAC clash on Monday afternoon in Wellesley. Due to a lengthy weather delay in game one, game two of the scheduled doubleheader was not started and will be made up on a later date. The win improves Wellesley to 8-6 overall, 2-2 in NEWMAC play. WPI slips to 6-11, 2-3 in NEWMAC play.

The Blue, playing as the visiting team, pounded out 11 total hits to earn the victory. Wellesley took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, recording four hits in the frame. Lauren Goldfarb  and Emilyrose Havrilla recorded RBI singles, while Mara Blesoff and Kimberly Cabral also added hits.

WPI plated a pair in the bottom of the second to knot the game at 2-2. Nicole McDonough had the big hit in the inning, with her single to center scoring Erin Beaulieu and Chiana Montesi.

Wellesley regained the lead with a three-run fifth inning, taking advantage of four hits and two WPI errors. Abby Casey led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Jayne Ellis double for the first run of the frame. The Blue then scored on a WPI miscue, while an RBI single from Elizabeth Murphy made it 5-2. 

WPI cut the Wellesley lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth, as an infield single from Jacquelyne DiTroia sent home Ali LaRue. That was all the scoring for WPI though, as Goldfarb shut the Engineers down in the final two frames. Wellesley added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Cabral to set the final to 6-3 Blue.

Four different Wellesley played recorded mult-hit games, led by Ellis who went two-for-three with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Havrilla, Cabral and Goldfarb rounded out the Blue offense, each tallying two hits and an RBI. In the circle, Goldfarb picked up the win, throwing all seven, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits with nine strikeouts.

For WPI, McDonough collected three hits and driving in two runs, while DiTroia added the other WPI RBI. Christa Coscia suffered the loss, throwing five innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits. Clare Doolin pitched well in relief, throwing two innings, allowing a run on two hits.

Wellesley is back in action on Wednesday, playing a non-conference doubleheader at Rhode Island College at 3:00pm. WPI returns to the field on Friday,traveling to Springfield for a pair of NEWMAC games beginning at 3:00pm.
