Schwartzmeyer No-Hitter Leads Blue Softball to Sweep Over Endicott

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Sarah Schwartzmeyer's no-hitter highlighted a Wellesley softball sweep over Endicott College in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon in Wellesley. The Blue won game one, 5-1, and took the nightcap, 8-0, in five innings.

The sweep improves Wellesley to 17-7 overall, while Endicott dips to 6-12. The Blue have now won 10 of their last 11 games, and their wins today snapped the Gulls' six-game win streak.

Wellesley grabbed a victory in game one, on the shoulders of a strong pitching performance from Lindsay Johnson and clutch hitting from Abby Casey. Johnson threw seven innings, scattering five hits, allowing one run with a strikeout and a walk. Casey finished 2-for-3 with a homerun and three RBI to lead the Blue.

Wellesley got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, executing a double-steal that saw Carly Bresee score, while Casey was in a rundown at second. Bresee had led off with a single, while Casey also recorded a hit in the inning.

Endicott tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth with an RBI double from Sam DiBella. Colleen Martin worked a leadoff walk in the inning and was advanced to second on a wild pitch. DiBella then laced a double to left center to score Martin.

Wellesley broke open the game for good in the bottom of the fourth, plating four runs to take a 5-1 lead. Walks to Emilyrose Havrilla and Mariah Philips led off the inning for the Blue, while a Bresee sacrifice fly scored the first run. Casey then laced a perfectly placed ball down the right field line, which ended up being deep enough to go in the books as a three-run inside-the-park homerun.

With the hosts up 5-1, Johnson retired nine out of the final 10 batters, allowing only an infield single to seal the victory.

Offensively for the Blue, Casey's two-hit, three-RBI performance led the way, while Jayne Ellis recorded a pair of doubles in the win. Bresee ended the game 1-for-2 with an RBI.

For Endicott, Jess Linden went 2-for-3, while DiBella added a double. In the circle, Meg Donegan suffered the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits with three walks. Danielle LaRocque pitched well in relief, throwing two and a third innings, allowing just one hit.

In game two, Schwartzmyer fired a five-inning no-hitter, while Wellesley pounded out 10 hits to cruise to the 8-0 victory. Schwartzmeyer finished with six strikeouts, three walks, without allowing a run.

Wellesley put together three hits in the bottom of the first, scoring on an RBI groundout from Kimberly Cabral. The Blue continued the momentum into the bottom of the second, exploding for six runs on five hits. Bresee, Ellis and Havrilla each collected RBI doubles in the inning, while Casey added an RBI single.

The Blue plated their eighth run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, as a leadoff double from Casey came around to score on an Ellis fielder's choice.

Casey finished with three hits and three runs scored for Wellesley, while LaBouyer and Ellis each added a pair. Ellis also drove in two runs in the victory.

For Endicott, Courtney Blake got the start, throwing two and a third, allowing two runs (one earned), on three hits.

Wellesley is back in action tomorrow night, making up the second game of a rescheduled doubleheader against WPI. The game will be played at Worcester State at 6:00pm. Endicott also plays tomorrow, making up a pair of games against Brandeis, at home at 3:30pm.
