Matulis/Tada Win But #1 Amherst Too Strong for Blue Tennis

AMHERST, Mass. -- Amherst College, the number one team in the nation, upended Wellesley College, 8-1, in women's tennis action on Sunday afternoon in Amherst. The loss ends Wellesley's 2012-13 season with an 11-10 overall record, while Amherst improves to 15-1 with the victory.

Wellesley nabbed its team point in doubles, as the Blue's third pair of Catherine Matulis and Kendall Tada combined for a hard-fought, 9-7, win over Amherst's Mary Soyster and Rebecca Pol. At one, Amherst's Jordan Brewer and Gabby Devlin, topped Diana Granger and Sojung Lee, 8-3, while at two, Sarah Monteagudo and Isabel Camacho of Amherst topped Suzanne Barth and Veronica Lin, 8-2.

In singles, the Jeffs proved too deep for the Blue, winning each match in straight sets to earn the 8-1 team victory. Ghosh topped Lee, 6-0, 6-2 at one, while Monteagudo defeated Granger, 6-2, 6-2 at two. At three, Camaco defeated Matulis, 6-2, 6-4, while at four, Min was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Barth. Wrapping up singles, Slutsky topped Tada, 6-3, 6-3, at five, while Nyirjesy was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Lin at six. 

Today's match closed out the 2012-13 campaign for Wellesley, who finished the year as both NEWMAC and Seven Sisters runner-up.
