Wheaton Overpowers Wellesley Lacrosse

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wheaton College lacrosse team used a dominating performance to upend Wellesley College on Tuesday afternoon in NEWMAC action at Wellesley. The win keeps the Lyons a perfect 4-0 in conference play, 6-4 overall, while the Blue dip to 1-2 in the NEWMAC, 6-5 overall.

Wellesley scored the first goal of the game, but Wheaton was untouchable for the next 46 minutes. The Lyons compiled a 17-0 run that spanned much of the action, not yielding a second Blue goal until there was just 12 minutes remaining on the clock.

The Blue did close out the game with three straight scores, but couldn't overcome Wheaton's potent offense.

Turnovers and ground balls were nearly identical between the teams, but Wheaton held a 14-9 advantage in draw controls, including winning seven of 10 in the second half. The Lyons also out-shot Wellesley, 22-14.

Wheaton's Leila Mills scored a game-high five goals, while Allie Bush also hit a game-high with seven points (two goals, five assists). Mia Cambi had six points with three goals and three assists, while Amy Moreira recorded three goals and two assists. Rounding out the offense for Wheaton, Jenna Tewksbury scored three times, while Melanie Sharick also added a goal.

Also for Wheaton, Sharick led all players with six draw controls, while Moreira added four and Mills recorded two. Cambi and Moreira each picked up two ground balls, while Katy Ananian made six saves to earn the win in goal.

Wellesley's Brit Mscisz picked up three goals and an assists for four points, while Claire Canty also scored for the Blue. Meagan Fuchs and Cassidy Jemo recorded assists to complete the Wellesley offense.

On the other side of the ball, Canty picked up three caused turnovers, while Alyssa Andres and Meredith Roy each added three draw controls. Tori Hysko played the first 39 minutes in goal, before giving way to Tya Logan. They combined for six total assists.

Wellesley is back in action on Saturday at Springfield, playing at 11:00am. Wheaton next plays on Thursday, traveling to Tufts for a 4:30pm game.
