Softball Elminated From NEWMAC Tourney

Box Score

It was a win or go home scenario for #3-seeded Babson and #4-seeded Wellesley in the NEWMAC softball tournament on Saturday. Behind a strong pitching performance by Kathleen Conway and an explosive offense led by Lindsey Schmid, Babson defeated Wellesley by a score of 11-1 in five innings.

Conway earned the victory, going all five innings and giving up one run on two hits and a walk, while collecting six strikeouts. Lauren Goldfarb was tagged with the loss for Wellesley, pitching one-plus innings and allowing four runs on five hits and a walk.

Three first-inning doubles by the Beavers accounted for a quick 2-0 lead, though the damage could have been worse, as Babson stranded two runners.

A two-run homer by Babson's Maya Lacy in the second inning chased Goldfarb. Her replacement, Sarah Schwartmeyer, also surrendered a two-run blast, this time off the bat of Schmid.

It was the fourth inning, though, that proved to be the most devastating for Wellesley. RBI hits from Jackie Enos and Schmid, followed by run-producing doubles from Ashleigh Phelps and Conway resulted in a five-run inning for the Beavers.

Down 11-0, Wellesley managed to plate one run in the fifth and final inning.

With the win, Babson advances to play Wheaton, while Wellesley's NEWMAC softball run was ended.
