Wellesley Soccer Plays to 1-1 tie with Springfield

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. — Wellesley College soccer and Springfield College played to a 1-1 tie in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match on a rainy and cold afternoon at the Wellesley Outdoor Fields Complex.

With the tie, Wellesley's fifth of the season and third in NEWMAC play, the Blue close out the regular season at 8-7-5 overall and 2-5-3 in conference play. Springfield finishes the regular season at 10-3-4 overall and 6-1-3 in the NEWMAC.

Sumner Hanula gave the Blue an early advantage, scoring her first goal of the season on an assist from Darlene Dang at 25:27 of the first. However, the Blue's advantage was short lived as the Pride knotted the game at a goal apiece just over ten minutes later when junior Brooke Hattinger notched her seventh goal of the season at 35:36.

Springfield held a 12-7 advantage in shots in the match, including a 7-4 advantage after the break, but neither team was able to add to their total in the second half or in the overtime periods.

Senior Claire Cerda and junior Kat Goldsmith combined to make six saves for the Blue, with Goldsmith turning away five shots on goal in the second half. Springfield senior Lucy Gillett made three saves for the Pride.

Today's game concludes the 2014-15 season for the Blue. Springfield, the number two seed in the NEWMAC Championship tournament, will host seventh seeded Coast Guard on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
