Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. — Four goals from junior Hannah Flesch led the #13 Wellesley College field hockey team to a 7-1 victory over visiting Husson University on Saturday in non-conference action at Wellesley. The win improves the Blue record to 5-0, while the Eagles dip to 2-4.

Wellesley jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held on for a 7-1 victory. The hosts held a commanding 23-3 advantage in shots with a 13-3 lead in penalty corners. The Blue have now out-scored opponents 38-3 on the season.

Flesch's three goals today give her a team-leading 10 on the season. She also leads the team with 23 points. Sophomore Nikki Sharkin added a goal and an assist to the offensive numbers, sophomore Courtney Peterson and first-year Emmy Hamilton each added solo goals. Seniors Nathalie GruetMeghan Peterson, and Lallie Lukens, and sophomore Mary Lemayall aided the offense with assists.

Husson's lone score came off the stick of senior Melissa Souza who was assisted by sophomore Taylor Lovley. In goal for the Eagles, first-year Abby Greenleaf made seven saves.

Wellesley scored three early first half goals, while controlling the midfield to keep Husson on defense much of the half. Flesch started the scoring in the fourth minute of play, corralling a wide shot and sending it chest-high across the cage for a goal. Five minutes later, Courtney Peterson pushed the Blue lead to 2-0, deflecting a hard shot from Sharkin off a corner. Flesch scored her second goal of the half on a rebounded shot from Gruet, making it 3-0 Wellesley, where it stood at the break.

The Blue wasted little time when play resumed, pushing the lead to 4-0 just over a minute into the half. Sridhar carried a ball from the left to the right side of the circle and bulleted a shot to the opposite side of the cage for a goal. Nine minutes later, Hamilton made it 5-0 Wellesley, deflecting a ball from Lallie Lukens on a corner attempt.

Hamilton got on the board in the 60th minute of play on a corner. Lovley sent a ball to the top of the circle where Souza rocketed a shot to the left side of the cage, making it 5-1 with just under 10 to play.

Wellesley responded with a pair of unanswered goals, scoring in the 67th and 69th minutes to set the final to 7-1. Sharkin got the team's sixth goal on an assist from Meghan Peterson on a corner. Flesch scored the game's final tally, converting a nice pass from Lemay for the score.

Wellesley sophomore Lucy Hurlock played the first 35 minutes, not allowing a goal. Senior Becky Hamilton came on for the second half to wrap up the win. Neither keeper needed to make a save for Wellesley.

Up next, the Blue will head to Trinity College on Wednesday, taking on the Bantams at 6:30pm. Husson is off for 11 days and will return to action on September 24th with a 7:00pm game at Colby.
