Wellesley Tennis Caps NEWMAC Regular Season with 9-0 Win at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis closed out the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season with a 9-0 victory over Springfield College on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Courts.

Wellesley, now 7-3 overall, finishes the NEWMAC regular season with a record of 6-2 and will enter the postseason with the number three seed, trailing only MIT and Babson in the conference standings. Springfield is 3-6 on the season, 2-6 in conference play, and currently stands in seventh place in the NEWMAC.

Junior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and first year Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) topped Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Stephanie Foster (Woodbridge, Conn.), 8-2, to earn the victory at #1 Doubles before the Blue went on to take 8-1 wins at both #2 and #3 Doubles.  

At #2 Doubles, junior Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) and sophomore Emily Olson (La Jolla, Calif.) defeated sophomore Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.) and first year Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.). Junior Caroline Dickensheets (Alpharetta, Ga.) and first year So Jin Ki (Seoul, South Korea) followed with a victory over juniors Nicole Piazza (Portland, Conn.) and Bri Borus (Dudley, Mass.) at #3 Doubles.

All six Wellesley players then went on to earn victories in singles play, with Olson earning a straight sets victory at #4 over Litchfield. Huang, 6-1, 6-0 over London, and Chen, 6-2, 6-2, over Foster, earned wins at #1 Singles and #2 Singles, respectively.

Stojkovic picked up a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win over first year Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) in the closest match of the day at #3 Singles, while Ki took down Parrish, 6-2, 6-1, at #5 Singles and Dickensheets each earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) at #6 Singles.

Next up, Wellesley will participate in the annual Bowdoin Invitational Friday-Saturday, October 16-18, in Brunswick, Maine. The NEWMAC Tournament will open the following week, with First Round play set for Wednesday, October 21.
