Wellesley Tennis Advances to NEWMAC Semifinals with 5-0 Win over Springfield

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis used a 5-0 sweep to defeat visiting Springfield College in the quarterfinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis tournament on Wednesday evening. 

Wellesley, the tournament's third overall seed, improves to 8-3 overall and advances to face second seeded Babson College (10-1, 7-1 NEWMAC) at 11:30 AM on Saturday, October 24, at MIT. Springfield closes out the fall season with a record of 3-7.

Wellesley swept through doubles play to take a 3-0 advantage into the singles matchups. The Blue's #1 Doubles pairing of Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) and Carina Chen (Hong Kong) earned Wellesley's first win, cruising to an 8-0 sweep of Springfield's Melissa Parrish (Framingham, Mass.) and Rachel Litchfield (Northbridge, Mass.).

First year Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) and sophomore Emily Olson (La Jolla, Calif.) added the second Wellesley win of the match, as they defeated Emily Etter (Guilford, Conn.) and Ariana Shemms (Goshen, Conn.) by an 8-3 margin. First years Tristan Lorich (New York, N.Y.) and Rosanne Hu (Troy, Texas) then concluded doubles play with an 8-1 triumph over Rachel London (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Fiona Stickney (Bayport, N.Y.).

Wellesley closed out the match with victories at #5 Singles and #6 Singles. Hu earned her second win of the day at #6 Singles defeating Stickney, 6-0, 6-1. Junior Caroline Dickensheets (Alpharetta, Ga.) then went on to defeat Shemms, 6-1, 6-0 at #5 Singles to clinch the Wellesley win. 

The winner of Saturday's semifinal between the Blue and Babson will advance to face the winner of the tournament's second semifinal between fourth-seeded Mount Holyoke and top-seeded MIT in the 2015 NEWMAC Championships match. Mount Holyoke also advanced to the semifinals with a 5-0 win on Wednesday, as they topped fifth-seeded Wheaton.
