No. 10 Blue Field Hockey Earns 3-1 Victory Over No. 19 Trinity (Conn.)

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey got three goals from three different players to earn a 3-1 non-conference victory over visiting Trinity College (Conn.) on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue improve to 4-0 on the season while the visiting Bantams drop to 0-2 early in their 2015 campaign.

Junior Nikki Sharkin (Summit, N.J.) scored her second goal of the season on the Blue's first penalty corner of the afternoon, slapping home a pass from first year Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.) that popped high over the head of Trinity goalkeeper Sophie Fitzpatrick (Duxbury, Mass.).

Sharkin's marker was the only goal of a first half that saw the Blue outshoot the Bantams by a 6-1 margin.

Despite Trinity's 7-6 edge in shots after the break, the Blue added a pair of goals to take a 3-0 lead by the 58th minute. Junior Courtney Peterson (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished a play on a loose ball in front, emphatically scoring her second of the season to make it 2-0 at 41:13. Senior Anissa Sridhar (London, Ontario) then added her sixth of the season at 57:03 to up the Blue advantage.

The visitors were able to break through late in the contest, scoring their first goal of the season when sophomore Kelcie Finn (Weymouth, Mass.) got the ball by Wellesley junior goalkeeper Lucy Hurlock (Needham, Mass.) with less than a minute remaining in the game.

Hurlock finished with a season-high four save for the Blue, making three of her four stops after the break. Fitzpatrick added six saves for Trinity, as Wellesley finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots and an 8-5 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.

After opening the season with four straight non-conference wins, Wellesley will welcome Wheaton at 12:00 PM on Saturday for their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game of the season. Trinity will return home to host Hamilton on Saturday beginning at 11:00 AM.
