Wellesley Tennis Powers Past Mount Holyoke, 7-2

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College tennis swept through doubles play before taking four of the six singles matches to cruise to a 7-2 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Mount Holyoke College on Sunday.

The Blue are now 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in NEWMAC matches. Mount Holyoke is also 4-1 and 2-1 in the NEWMAC following their first setback of the year.

Wellesley's top pairing of senior Carina Chen (Hong Kong) and sophomore Justine Huang (Coto de Caza, Calif.) earned an 8-6 win over sophomore Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan) and first year Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan) to open doubles. The Blue continued to cruise at No. 2, where senior Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, B.C.) and first year Sarah Yan (Holmdel, N.J.) took an 8-5 victory over MHC senior Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J. l) and first year Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif.).

It took an extra point for the Blue to grab the victory at No. 3 doubles, as first year Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and sophomore Rosanne Hu (Sugar Land, Texas) outlasted MHC senior Amy Chen (Hilo, Hawaii) and junior Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India), 9-7, to complete the doubles sweep.

The Blue made it 4-0 in singles, drawing to within one of the match victory when Huang defeated Tiberwal, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3. The Lyons got on the boards at No. 6 singles thanks to an Amy Chen victory over Blue sophomore Tristan Lorich (New York, N.Y.). However, Wellesley clinched the match when Stojkovic defeated Peabody, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4.

Wellesley added two more wins in the finals three matches, as first year Korina Hernandez (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) earned a 6-0, 7-5, win over Lyons' sophomore Clara Wang (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) at No. 5 and Yan defeated Ching-Ching Huang 2-6, 6-4, 11-9, at No. 2.

Mount Holyoke earned their final point at No. 1, as Yazawa recorded a tough 5-7, 6-1, 10-7 win against Wellesley's Carina Chen

Both teams continue conference play next Saturday. Wellesley will travel to Clark for a 1:00 PM match and Mount Holyoke will head to MIT for a 12:00 PM contest.
