Wellesley Tennis Opens Competition at Bowdoin Invitational

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Wellesley College tennis was in action throughout the day on Friday, competing in the 2019 Bowdoin Invitational in both singles and doubles matches. The doubles draw included 18 different pairings, while the singles tournament consisted of five brackets made-up of eight players each.

Doubles

The fourth seeded Wellesley team of senior Selina Peng (Taichung, Taiwan) and sophomore Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) defeated Lindsey Hernandez and Jessica Thai of Colby, 8-0, in the opening round of the doubles draw before falling in the quarterfinal round, 8-0, to Jessica Ampel and Lily Feldman of Skidmore. The duo was the only Wellesley pairing to advance out the opening round.

Singles

Sophomore Cinji Lee (Seoul, South Korea) was the only Wellesley player to advance to the finals in her bracket. Playing in the D singles bracket, Lee defeated Laura Littlefield of Bates in the opening round before defeating Jessica Tsai of Colby, 7-6, 7-4, in the semifinals. Lee will play Lindsay Hernandez of Colby in the D final on Sunday. Peng and Shen lost opening round matches in the A bracket, however, Shen will play in the consolation final after advancing in the backdraw following the defeat.

In C singles, sophomore Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) advanced by default before falling in the semifinals to Morgan Hall of Bowdoin. Also in the C bracket, junior Lily Chu (Princeton, N.J.) dropped a 6-3, 6-2 final to Audrey Soohoo of Skidmore, but advanced by default to the consolation final to face Haley Washington of Bates tomorrow.

In the D singles bracket, sophomore Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) defeated Sofia Carlsson of Skidmore, 6-4, 7-5, to advance to the semifinals against Lindsey Hernandez (Colby), however, Hernandez knocked the Blue sophomore out with a 7-6 (2), 6-1, win in the next round. In E singles, first year Dana Feng (Irvine, Calif.) picked-up her first singles win but bowed out in the semifinals.
