Fencing Finishes with 4-2 Record at NFC Conference Meet No. 1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Wellesley fencing team went an impressive 4-2 in the first NFC Conference meet of the season on Saturday. The Blue picked up victories against UMass-Amherst, Boston University, MIT, and Brandeis.

First year Samantha Renton (Rockville, Md.) set the pace for the foil team, going a perfect 7-0 and improving her overall record to 34-4. Teammate Sejal Saxena (Chappaqua, N.Y.) posted a solid 8-1 record for foil. Leading the epee squad was junior Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) who finished the day with a winning 9-5 record. For sabre, Brooke Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) competed against all six teams going 9-5 and Leena Hobson (Oakland, Calif.) went a solid 5-1.

Wellesley 10, Boston College 17

The Blue suffered a tough loss to BC in the first match of the NFC meet. Alexia Gilioli (New York, N.Y.), Kimura, and Dodrill all went 2-1 in their respective weapons. 

Wellesley 22, Boston University 5

Wellesley bounced back with a dominant 22-5 win over BU. Foil went a perfect 9-0 with wins from Saxena, Renton, and Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.). Panya Tang (Toronto, Ontario) did not lose a point in epee and Hobson also went 3-0.

Wellesley 8, Brown 19

In the third match, Ella Boodell posted the only winning record for the Blue going 2-1 in foil. Sabre fell 6-3 and epee dropped its match 7-2. 

Wellesley 19, UMass-Amherst 8

With UMass next on the schedule, the Blue got back to winning fashion. First year Mia Chao (Washington, D.C.) went a perfect 3-0 in her second match of the day. Foil continued to dominate, going 9-0 as a unit and epee got a 2-1 performance by Elena Vona (Millstone, N.J.). 

Wellesley 14, MIT 13

The Blue had its closest match of the day with a 14-13 win over rival MIT. Boodell set the tone, going 3-0 in foil. Both Tang and Kimura would go 2-1 in epee to secure a 5-4 team win. Finally, Dodrill and Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.) went 2-1 as Wellesley downed the Engineers.

Wellesley 21, Brandeis 6

The final match of the competition was dominated by Wellesley by a score of 21-6. Epee senior Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) saw her first perfect match of the day, going 3-0 against Brandeis. Kimura and Gilioli also finished undefeated in the win.

The Blue will next compete at the Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, Mass. on Sunday December 5.
