Wellesley Fencing Posts 7-2 Record at EWFC Championships on Sunday

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Blue fencing team earned an impressive 7-2 record at the EWFC Championships hosted by Vassar College on Sunday. Wellesley picked up wins over Haverford, Yeshiva, Drew, Hunter, CCNY, Denison, and Vassar.

Sophomore Nerine Uyanik (San Jose, Calif.) and junior Clara Brotzen-Smith (Houston, Texas) each recorded a 15-0 in foil and epee respectively to lead the Blue. First year Makana Burch (Portland, Ore.) led the sabre squad with a 16-4 record. 

Wellesley 24, Haverford 3

The Blue began the day with a dominant victory over Haverford. First year Ella Boodell (Edgemont, N.Y.), senior Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.), Brotzen-Smith, junior Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.), and junior Brooke Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) all earned a perfect 3-0 record.

Wellesley 25, Yeshiva 2

Foil backed up its opening round with a perfect 9-0 start versus Yeshiva. Epee and sabre each compiled a 8-1 record to earn the win.

Wellesley 12, Stevens 15

The Blue suffered its first loss in a close matchup with Stevens. Junior Alexia Gilioli ( New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) each had a 2-1 record for foil. Dodrill added a 2-1 effort in sabre.

Wellesley 23, Drew 4

Six Blue members posted a perfect 3-0 record in a bounceback victory over Drew. Foil went 9-0, epee 8-1, and sabre 6-3.

Wellesley 22, Hunter 5

The fourth win of the day came in a rout over Hunter. First year Elena Vona (Millstone, N.J.), Brotzen-Smith, and Kimura all went 3-0 in epee. Sophomore Candace Xie (Jiangsu, China) posted a 2-0 record in sabre.

Wellesley 26, CCNY 1

The biggest win of the day came in a 26-1 win over CCNY in the sixth round. Epee and foil combined for an 18-0 record and sabre finished 8-1.

Wellesley 11, Johns Hopkins 16

The Blue dropped a tough matchup to eventual EWFC Champions Johns Hopkins. Vona had a 2-1 record in epee and sabre teammates Burch and Ersen each had a 2-1 record.

Wellesley 24, Denison 3

After the loss, the Blue once again bounced back to earn a big win. Nine different fencers competed without taking a loss.

Wellesley 19, Vassar 8

The final match of the day was handled in a 19-8 win over tournament host Vassar. Renton went 3-0 in foil, Wolstenholme-Britt was perfect for epee, and Burch, Dodrill, and Ersen all finished 3-0 in sabre.

The Blue next compete at the NEIFC Championships on Saturday, February 26 hosted by Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
