Wellesley Fencing Earns Four Top-30 Finishers at NCAA Northeast Regional

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Twelve fencers competed for the Blue on Sunday at the 2022 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

First year Ella Boodell (Edgemont, N.Y.) and junior Alexia Gilioli (New York, N.Y.) took 25th and 28th place, respectively, in foil to lead the Blue. Junior Kimberley Kimura (Los Angeles, Calif.) added a 26th place finish for the epee squad. Junior Hunter Dodrill (Boca Raton, Fla.) was the top finisher for sabre in 31st.

Women's Foil:

Boodell began in the quarterfinal round and picked up two wins and a -8 touch ratio before being eliminated and taking a team-high 25th place. Gilioli advanced from round one with a 3-1 record and a +3 touch ratio. The junior then fell in the quarterfinals with a 2-4 (-13) record. Sophomore Nerine Uyanik (San Jose, Calif.) also advanced from her pool going 3-1 (+7) before falling in the second round and went 1-5 with a -14 touch ratio to place 30th overall.

First year Samantha Renton (Rockville, Md.) had a solid first round with a 2-2 (+2) record but did not advance and placed 36th. Sophomore Edith Po (Bernardsville, N.J.) added a 43rd place finish with a 1-3 record and -6 touch ratio.

Women's Epee:

Kimura paced the Blue in epee, finishing 26th overall with a 2-2 (+3) record in the first round. After advancing,  Kimura added two more wins and a -5 touch ratio but did not advance to the semifinals. Senior Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) competed in her final match with the Blue and went 1-2 with a -4 touch ratio to take 41st. 

First year Elena Vona (Millstone, N.J.) finished in 42nd with a 1-3 (0) record and just one spot behind was junior Clara Brotzen-Smith (Houston, Texas) who added a 1-3 (-5) record in the first round.

Women's Sabre:

Dodrill led the way for sabre with a 31st place finish and began the day in the second round. Dodrill compiled a 1-5 (-18) record in a pool with three Division I fencers. First year Makana Burch (Portland, Ore.) was able to advance to the quarterfinals after going 3-1 (+3) in the opening round. Burch was then eliminated after a winless second round. Rounding out the day was senior Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.) who finished 0-4 (-6) in her final competition with the Blue.
