Wellesley Tennis Defeats Smith 8-1 and Secures No. 2 Seed in NEWMAC Tournament

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Wellesley College tennis team wrapped up the regular season with an 8-1 victory at Smith on Saturday afternoon. The Blue clinched the No. 2 seed in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) postseason tournament.

The Blue now stand at 10-5 overall and 7-1 in conference play. Smith falls to 7-7 overall and 3-5 in NEWMAC play.

The No. 1 Wellesley duo of sophomores Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) began the day with an 8-6 victory over Lili Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Clara Goshgarian (Lake Forest, Ill.). Senior Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) took control of the No. 2 doubles match with a tight 8-6 victory. Completing the doubles sweep for the Blue was seniors Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.) and Libby Chang (San Marino, Calif.) winning 8-3 over Olivia Monos (Reading, Penn.) and Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, Penn.).

On the No. 1 court, Markwart won a hard fought 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 win versus Lili Goshgarian. Mu continued her success with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 win in the No. 2 singles. Shen handled junior Ashley Felix (El Paso, Texas) 6-0, 6-2 to extend the Wellesley lead to 6-0. The Pioneers were able to win one singles match as Olivia Monos defeated DeAgazio 7-6, 2-6, 10-7 in the No. 5 match. Blue junior Celeste Tran (Los Altos, Calif.) came in to win the No. 6 match over Gibson by a score of 6-4, 6-0. Libby Chang was able to win her singles match 6-2, 6-0 over Alexa Monos on the No. 4 court. 

The Blue are locked into the semifinals of the NEWMAC Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will face the winner of No. 6 Mount Holyoke and No. 3 Babson with MIT hosting.
