Wellesley Tennis Falls to Skidmore in Spring Opener, 7-2

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - No. 33 Wellesley College tennis fell to No. 28 Skidmore 7-2 in their spring opener Saturday at the YMCA Wilton.

The Thoroughbreds took two of the three doubles matches. The Blue earned a decisive 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles with juniors Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.) and Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.) defeating Skidmore's duo of sophomores Grace Troung (Burke, Va.) and Ella Provost (Hamilton, Mass.). 

Skidmore won No. 2 and 3 doubles by identical scores of 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, Skidmore's team of seniors Maya Lal (Toronto, Ontario) and Chanhtel Thongphok (Gaithersburg, Md.) defeated Wellesley's team of junior Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) and first year Emilee Pak (Chicago, Ill.). For No. 3 doubles, the winning team consisted of Skidmore first year Beilynn Geiss (Loveland, Colo.) and sophomore Konica Dhull (Chandigarh, India), defeating Wellesley junior Jennifer Fan (Vancouver, British Columbia) and first year Isabella DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.)

The Thoroughbreds picked up a win at No. 3 singles with junior Katherine Almquist (Union Pier, Mich.) defeating I. DeAgazio 6-4, 6-1. Wellesley took a point at No. 1 singles with Mu rallying from down a set to win over Lal 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. 

Shortly after, Skidmore clinched the match with a pair of three set victories of their own at No. 2 and 4 singles. Alviar fell 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 at No. 2 and C. DeAgazio fell 4-6, 7-6 (1), 4-6 at No. 4.

The Thoroughbreds rounded out the 7-2 win with straight set wins at No. 5 and 6. Pak was defeated 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5 for Wellesley while Fan dropped a 6-2, 6-4 match at No. 6.

The Blue remain on the road tomorrow against RPI at 1:00 PM. The Thoroughbreds travel to Bard tomorrow at 12:00 PM for a Liberty League matchup.
