WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey scored a goal in each half to earn a 2-1 NEWMAC win over Springfield College on Saturday at Butler Stadium.
The Blue (9-4 Overall, 4-1 NEWMAC) took a 1-0 lead, 5:03 into the contest on a goal by sophomore
Alex Butulis (Raleigh, N.C.). The play was set up when senior
River Schiff (Potomac, Md.) was running towards the end line and sent the ball to the front of the cage. Butulis was able to gain control from a defender and put it home for the first goal of the game.
The Wellesley lead remained 1-0 after a scoreless second quarter. The Blue finished the half with a 9-4 margin in shots (4-3 on goal) and a 4-2 edge in corners.
Wellesley doubled its score forty seconds into the third quarter. Schiff did the damage with a seventh goal of the season.
Springfield (4-9 Overall, 1-4 NEWMAC) cut the deficit in half with 6:04 left to play in regulation off a penalty corner. Junior Nicolette Morlock (Rexford, N.Y.) inserted the ball to sophomore Kristyn Vasselin (Hudson, Mass.) who redirected the ball to senior Molly Collins (Franklin, Mass.). Collins then ripped a shot into the corner of the cage to make the score 2-1.
Wellesley held strong down the stretch to earn the victory. The Blue outshot the Pride 15-8 (8-6 on goal), while each team took six corners.
First-year
Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) earned the win for the Blue with five saves. Junior Kaitlyn Parent (Glastonbury, Conn.) had six saves for the Pride.
The Blue will wrap up a three-game homestand at 6:00 PM against Endicott College on Wednesday, October 16. The Pride will host Dean College on Thursday, October 17 at 6:00 PM.
