NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Smith College picked up a 1-0 NEWMAC victory versus Wellesley College field hockey on Saturday.
Junior Callahan Day (Shady Side, Md.) knocked in the lone goal for the Pioneers (4-10 Overall, 3-3 NEWMAC) midway through the third quarter. That tally proved to be all of the scoring Smith needed, as first year keeper Emma Newman (Clarks Summit, Pa.) earned a shutout in the cage with four saves.
The Blue (9-6 Overall, 4-2 NEWMAC) put up nine shots with five on goal. First year Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) sent back four shots.
Smith won the battle of the penalty corners 7-6 and registered 10 total shots, with five on goal.
Each team competes in a NEWMAC game on Tuesday, October 22. The Blue travel to Babson College for a 6:00 PM affair and the Pioneers host WPI at the same time.
