WELLESLEY, Mass. – Three first quarter goals led Wellesley College field hockey to a 5-1 non-conference victory versus Nichols College at Butler Stadium on Wednesday.
First year Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) knocked in a pair of goals for the Blue (7-3 Overall, 2-0 NEWMAC). Sophomore Katie Golla (Oak Park, Ill.) recorded two assists. Senior Maya Benway (Harvard, Mass.) and first year Gabi Chen (Mountain View, Calif.) both registered first career goals for Wellesley.
First year Morgan Belyea (Saugus, Mass.) put up the lone tally for the Bison (2-8 Overall). Sophomore Sofia Calabro (Johnston, R.I.) assisted on the score and keeper Sophia Venable (Troy, N.Y.) sent back nine shots.
Summers put the Blue on the board a minute into the contest. Benway and Chen followed suit with goals of their own in the first quarter, each assisted by Golla.Â
The Bison cut the score to 3-1 five minutes into the second frame. Two minutes later, Wellesley sophomore Alex Butulis (Raleigh, N.C.) ripped a shot into the cage, set up by a pass from classmate Marguerite Greene (Boston, Mass.).
Summers added the second goal to seal the 5-1 win in the middle of the fourth.
The Blue controlled the pace of the game with 29 shots to Nichols' four. Wellesley took 11 penalty corners. First year Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) earned the win with a pair of saves.
Next up, the Blue face NEWMAC opponent Salve Regina University on the road at 12:00 PM on Saturday, October 5. The Bison will return to Vendetti Field to host U. of New England at that same time.
