Field Hockey Hands Salve Regina First Loss with 2-1 Triumph

NEWPORT, R.I. – Wellesley College field hockey (8-3 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC) handed Salve Regina University (9-1 Overall, 2-1 NEWMAC) its first loss of the season on Saturday at Gaudet Field. The Blue won 2-1 behind a pair of goals from first-year Annika Schermerhorn (Clifton Park, N.Y.).

Wellesley held the conference's leading offense (4.00) to one goal on their lone shot on target.  

Junior Julia Decker (Newton, N.J.) put the home team on the board with a goal less than four minutes into the contest. 

Wellesley tied the game late in the second quarter when Schermerhorn found the back of the cage. The goal was Schermerhorn's second of the season. 

Salve had a 4-3 edge in shots in the first and a 3-0 advantage in penalty corners. 

The teams played a scoreless third. Wellesley had a 4-1 advantage in shots in the frame. 

Schermerhorn struck again for the Blue in the 50th minute with the game-winner. 

The Blue controlled the action in the second half with an 8-1 margin in shots and a 4-3 discrepancy in corners .

First-year Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) earned the victory in the cage for Wellesley. Senior Bryn Protheroe (Glastonbury, Conn.) took the loss for Salve with five saves. 

Both teams next play on Tuesday, October 8. Wellesley welcomes MIT to Butler Stadium at 6:00 PM while Salve Regina travels to Wheaton for a 7:00 PM game.
