SPRINGFIELD. Mass. – Wellesley College soccer (5-8-3 Overall, 1-6-2 NEWMAC) dropped a 2-1 NEWMAC match at Springfield College (8-3-4 Overall, 5-2-2 NEWMAC) on Saturday at Brock-Affleck Field.
In an evenly played match throughout, the Pride broke a scoreless tie in the 52nd minute after Wellesley was whistled for a foul in the box that resulted in a penalty kick attempt. Graduate Jen Walker (Webster, Mass.) stepped to the spot and successfully converted the try to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.Â
Springfield took a 2-0 advantage with less than eight minutes to play when first-year Mia Salmon (Arlington, Va.) found the back of the net off a feed from junior Meredith Healy (Niantic, Conn.).
Wellesley cut the deficit in half with three minutes to play but ran out of time to complete the rally. Senior Juliana Mytko (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) recorded the Blue goal and was assisted by sophomore Mia Shanafelt (Mercer Island, Wash.).
Junior Riley McNair (Cupertino, Calif.) finished with two saves for Wellesley, while senior Taryn Ryan (Holyoke, Mass.) made three saves to preserve the Pride victory.Â
Springfield finished with a 9-8 edge in shots, while each team took four on target.Â
Both teams play on the road on Wednesday, October 30. The Blue head to MIT at 4:00 PM while the Pride travel to Babson College for a 3:00 PM contest.
