Wellesley Volleyball Survives Scare from Lions, 3-2

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College volleyball (10-8 Overall, 4-5 NEWMAC) erased a 2-0 deficit to win the final three sets in Tuesday night's 3-2 NEWMAC victory over Emerson College (11-14 Overall, 2-7 NEWMAC). The Blue won by scores of 19-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18 and 15-13. 

Sophomore Kate Giang (Corte Madera, Calif.) paced the Blue with 22 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Evelyn Hill (Rocklin, Calif.) was next with 13 kills and 15 digs. First-year Else Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) registered 33 assists, 13 digs and nine kills. First-year Logan Wilson (Woodside, Calif.) contributed eight kills on .316 hitting. Junior Kaija Kunze-Hoeg (Eagan, Minn.) finished with 37 digs. 

Senior Parker Cummings (Rochester, N.Y.) led Emerson with 16 kills. Senior Amelia Combs (Eugene, Ore.) posted 14 kills, while senior Brooke Maynez (Las Cruces, N.M.) added 11 kills.  Graduate Caroline Davis (Orlando, Fla.) picked up a team best 21 digs. First-year Chloe Hokenson (McLean, Va.) tallied 26 assists, 10 digs and four block assists. 

Emerson opened the fifth with a 4-1 run that was answered by five straight from the Blue. The visitors then took a 9-7 lead to force a Wellesley timeout. The Blue later trailed 13-11 but scored the next four points to complete the comeback. 

The Blue led 14-10 midway through the first set but Emerson responded by scoring the next five points to go in front. Wellesley later held an 18-17 advantage before the Lions went on an 8-1 run to close the set for a 25-19 victory. Cummings posted a team best five kills for Emerson, while Giang had four to lead the Blue. The first set featured 12 ties. 

Trailing 14-12 in the second, Emerson put an 8-0 run together for a comfortable 20-14 lead. The Blue rallied late to pull within a point at 24-23, but a Combs kill clinched the 2-0 lead for Emerson. Combs had five of the 11 Emerson kills in the set, while Hill registered five for Wellesley. 

The Lions carried the momentum into the third set to take an 8-4 lead. Wellesley rallied to go ahead 10-9. The set was later tied 12-12 when the Blue went on a 6-1 run to force an Emerson timeout at 18-13. The Blue would keep a safe distance from the Lions for the remainder of the set en route to the 25-19 victory. Wellesley hit .389 as a team with 17 kills in the set. Giang and Hill combined for 10. 

The fourth set was tied at 10-10 when Wellesley opened things up by scoring eight in a row, capped by a Giang kill. The Blue never looked back and cruised to the 25-18 victory. Giang finished the frame with five kills.  

Next up, the Blue host Salem State University in a non-conference match at 3:00 PM on Saturday, November 2. The Lions will return home to welcome Regis College on Friday, November 1 at 6:00 PM.
