WORCESTER, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball sophomore Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) went 3-for-3 on foul shots with no time remaining in overtime to give the Blue (2-0) a 57-55 non-conference win over Worcester State University on Wednesday night.
Barrow's 14 points and four steals helped the Blue rebound after Worcester State erased a 10-point deficit in the third quarter. Sophomore Mirella Funari (Phoenix, Ariz.) chipped in 13 points and five rebounds while junior Arla Hofer (Las Vegas, Nev.) pulled down a game-high 14 boards.Â
The Lancers (1-2) were led by 24 points from senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tyngsboro, Mass.), including 10 points from the free throw line. Classmate Abby St. Martin (Putnam, Conn.) hit a trio of threes and totaled 13 points while blocking three shots.Â
Down four heading into the fourth frame, Wellesley tied the game up with 6:24 on the clock with a layup from first-year Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.). From there, the teams alternated the next few buckets with a Caitlin Windross (Eastvale, Calif.) layup tying the score at 45-45 with 32 seconds left to play. A last second three attempt from Funari missed, setting up overtime.
Worcester State led 51-50 three minutes into overtime when first-year Emaleena Elson (Irvine, Calif.) sank a clutch bucket from behind the arc to put the Blue up two. Four foul shots from Hurynowicz made it 55-53 with 64 seconds of action left.Â
Chen went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe for Wellesley to cut the deficit to one with a half minute remaining. Barrow was fouled shooting a three at the buzzer to give Wellesley a last chance to claim the game. The sophomore hit all three attempts to ice the game for the Blue and keep the team undefeated to start the season.Â
Wellesley outscored Worcester State 16-11 in the first quarter. The teams were locked at 8-8 before the Blue went on a 6-0 run including a Windross three to give Wellesley a two possession lead after one frame.
The Blue pushed its lead to eight midway through the second quarter off of a jumper from Barrow. A late five points capped off by a Funari triple put Wellesley up 27-17 at the break.
The Lancers stormed back in a 22-8 third quarter to erase the Blue's lead. After trailing 34-23 four minutes into the period, Worcester State launched a 16-0 offensive barrage over the span of five and a half minutes to go up 39-34. A late Barrow free throw made it a four point game after three quarters of action.
The Blue shot 20-for-62 (32.3%) for the game and recorded 22 points off of turnovers. Wellesley outrebounded Worcester State 47-38.Â
The Blue will host its home opener on Saturday, November 16 at 1:00 PM against Colby-Sawyer College. The Lancers host Lasell University at the same time.
