WESTON, Mass. – Wellesley College basketball started the 2024-25 campaign at Regis College with a 65-55 victory on Friday night at Higgins Court.
Sophomore Trinity Barrow (Evans, Ga.) paced the Blue (1-0) with 15 points on 6-of-14 shooting with seven steals and two assists. First year Stacy Chen (Minneapolis, Minn.) added 12 points, sophomore Mirella Funari (Phoenix, Ariz.) tied for the most assists among all individuals with four and junior Arla Hofer (Las Vegas, Nev.) pulled down seven rebounds.Â
Sophomore Jillian Perry (Melrose, Mass.) splashed four threes for the Pride (0-1) and grabbed seven boards. Junior Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) added 11 points and grad student Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) supplied four assists.Â
After trading baskets early, Wellesley built up a five point lead six minutes into the first. A late 5-0 run for Regis kept the score within a point after one frame with the Blue up 13-12.
The teams exchanged the lead several times in the second quarter. Regis outscored Wellesley 16-14 in the period to take a 28-27 scoreline into halftime.Â
The lead went back-and-forth early in the third quarter, with a three-pointer putting the Pride back on top, 33-32. Wellesley responded with seven unanswered points, punctuated by a three-pointer from Chen, before junior Yitzel Serna (Palmdale, Calif.) hit a three-pointer to extend the Blue's lead to 43-35 late in the period.
Regis made it a single possession game, 50-47, at the 6:12 mark of the fourth with a Doherty three. Wellesley responded with a triple from Barrow. While the Pride once again got the game back to four points with a minute and 43 seconds left, free throws from Funari and a layup from Chen put the game out of reach. Ultimately, the blue scored eight of the final 10 points in a 65-55 affair.
Wellesley went 24-for-62 (38.7%) from the floor, with six made three pointers. The team put up 32 points in the paint and won both the battle of the boards (40-33) and the steals (14-7).Â
Regis went 20-of-55 (36.4%) for the contest, knocking down eight threes.Â
Up next, Wellesley heads to Worcester State University for a 7:30 PM contest on Wednesday, November 13. Regis will remain home that same day to host WPI at 7:00 PM.
