Tipton Scores Eight to Lead Blue Lacrosse Past Curry, 18-7

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Finley Tipton (Coppell, Texas) recorded a career-high eight goals to help Wellesley College lacrosse win its home opener 18-7 against Curry College on Tuesday at Butler Stadium.

In addition to Tipton, first year Lillian Games (Wayne, Pa.) scored five goals and senior Gabrielle Shell (Columbus, Ohio) put up a hat-trick with an assist for the Blue (1-3 Overall). First year Amelia Dupont (New York, N.Y.) contributed two assists and won six draw controls. Juniors Ryan Boone (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Anna Tutek (Trumbull, Conn.) each grabbed up four ground balls. Classmate Cianna Salvatora (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned three saves for Wellersley.

Junior Natalie Keenan (Haverhill, Mass.) registered six goals for the Colonels (0-2 Overall). Senior Ellie Hardman (Hanover, Mass.) had a goal, an assist and caused a pair of turnovers. First year Nicole Michael (New Hope, Pa.) won eight draw controls. Sophomore Zoe Ratcliffe (Medway, Mass.) and first year Alexa Puopolo (Lynn, Mass.) combined for seven stops for Curry.

Hardman and Tipton traded goals for their respective teams in opening four minutes. Keenan gave Curry a 2-1 lead at 9:57 in the first quarter before Games tied it up a minute and a half later. 

Tipton and Games combined for three more goals to give the Blue a 5-2 lead with under a minute left in the opening frame. Keenan cut the deficit to two before Games made it 6-3 for the Blue after one quarter of action.

Wellesley outscored Curry 5-2 in the second quarter to go up 11-5 by halftime. Tipton, first year Mallory Kennison (Norway, Maine), Shell and Games all scored for Wellesley. Keenan had both goals for Curry.

After Tipton scored again early in the third quarter, Keenan answered back at the 10:47 mark. The Blue notched the remaining three goals of the quarter. Tipton connected on two shots and Shell converted a free position shot.

Wellesley finished off an 18-7 win with fourth quarter goals from Shell, sophomore Phoebe Calero (Havre de Grace, Md.) and Games. Keenan put up one more tally for Curry.

The Blue outshot the Colonels 32-13 and Wellesley was successful on 4-of-7 free position shots. Wellesley held a narrow 15-13 edge in draw controls.

The Blue continue a four-game homestand on Wednesday, March 13 at 5:00 PM against Saint Joseph (Conn.). The Colonels return to Milton to host Rhode Island College at 4:00 PM on Thursday, March 7.
