WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey began NEWMAC play on Saturday with a 4-1 victory versus Wheaton College at Butler Stadium.
First-year
Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) opened the scoring with a goal five and a half minutes into the first. Summers then doubled the Blue lead, two minutes later, with a successful penalty stroke.
The Lyons (5-2, 0-1 NEWMAC) cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 9:27 mark of the first. Senior Delia Knox (Cumberland, Maine) knocked in a shot off of a pass from first-year Kayla Wilonski (Wallingford, Conn.).
Wellesley (4-3, 1-0 NEWMAC) first-year
Annika Schermerhorn (Clifton Park, N.Y.) recorded a first career goal for the Blue late in the second quarter to give Wellesley a 3-1 lead at halftime.
In the third, first-year
Madeline Hamstra (Houston, Texas) also notched a first collegiate goal by converting a penalty stroke to punctuate the 4-1 win.
First-year
Maddie Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich) earned the win for Wellesley with five saves. Wheaton sophomore goalie Grace Ferguson (Williston, Vt.) also had five stops for the Lyons.
Next up, the Blue take a trip to U. of New England for a 6:00 PM matchup on Wednesday, September 25. The Lyons play at Fitchburg State University on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:00 PM.
