BIDDEFORD, Maine – Wellesley College field hockey earned a 2-1 non-conference victory at the University of New England on Wednesday evening at Blue Bolt Field.
After three scoreless quarters, the offense picked up in the final frame. Wellesley struck first when sophomore
Alex Butulis (Raleigh, N.C.) took a shot from the left side of the cage that went past the UNE goalie and deflected off a defender.
The home team responded, less than four minutes later, when senior Lily Clough (Wells, Maine) took a reverse shot from just inside the top of the circle that found its way into the lower right side of the cage.
With 5:05 remaining, Wellesley was awarded a penalty corner. Senior
Camille Newman (New York, N.Y. ) inserted the ball to first-year teammate
Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.). Summers took two steps inside the circle and ripped a shot past everyone into the back of the goal for what proved to be the game-winner.
First-year
Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) earned the win with a season best 12 saves for the Blue. UNE senior Dawn DeWeese-Moss (Pittsfield, Maine) had three stops in the loss.
Wellesley improved to 5-3 with a second consecutive 2-1 victory over the Nor'easters. UNE falls to 3-5 on the season.
Next up, the Blue travel to Mount Holyoke College for a 3:00 PM NEWMAC contest on Saturday, September 28. The Nor'easters host Keene State University at 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 28.
