Summers’ Goal Gives Wellesley Field Hockey 1-0 Win at Saint Joseph’s

STANDISH, Maine – First year Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) provided all the offense Wellesley College field hockey needed to win 1-0 on the road against Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday afternoon.

Summers first career goal came late in the third quarter and proved to be the game-winner for the Blue (2-1). Classmates Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) and Maddie Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich.) stopped both shots faced to earn a first career shutout. Summer and sophomore Alex Butulis (Raleigh, N.C.) led Wellesley's attack with seven shots each.

The Blue outshot the Monks 36-2 with 21 shots on goal. Wellesley took 21 penalty corners.

Senior goalie Kassidy Collins (Gardiner, Maine) stopped 19 of 20 shots on goal for the Monks (0-2). Junior Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.) put a pair of shots on goal for Saint Joseph's.

Next up, Wellesley travels to Connecticut College for a 6:30 PM contest on Tuesday, September 10. The Monks will host Thomas College (Me.) on Wednesday, September 11.
