WPI Wins Defensive Battle over Soccer, 1-0

WORCESTER, Mass. – WPI registered a 1-0 score versus Wellesley College soccer  on Wednesday in NEWMAC play at H. Carr Field. With the win, the Engineers record now sits at 9-3-2 Overall and 4-1-1 in conference games.

Senior Riley McNair (Cupertino, Calif.) made 11 stops for the Blue (6-5-2 Overall, 3-2-1 NEWMAC), including a 200th career save. The keeper became the 10th athlete in program history to hit the 200 mark.

The hosts took a 1-0 lead at 17:02. A miscue with a defender sending the ball back to McNair led to a low bounce that resulted in an own goal.

WPI sophomore Abigail Johnson (Middletown, Conn.) had a chance to take on a second goal for the Engineers in the 67th minute. Johnson got a one on one look with McNair but as the goalie slid, she forced Johnson to miss wide, holding the goal to a 1-0 margin.

With under four minutes in the game, Wellesley had its best scoring opportunity of the game. Senior Elina Saab-Sundén (Palo Alto, Calif.) ripped a shot from close range but WPI keeper Ayla Verheul (Naarden, Netherlands) made a diving stop to keep the shutout intact. When the final horn sounded, the scoreboard read WPI 1, Wellesley 0.

WPI won the battle of the shots taken, 21-6. The Engineers took seven corner kicks while the Blue attempted one.

Each team is on the road for a conference contest on Saturday, October 18. The Blue play at Salve Regina University at 12:00 PM and the Engineers travel to Springfield College for a 1:00 PM kickoff.
