Field Hockey Celebrates Senior Day with 2-0 NEWMAC Win over Smith; Lekas Wins 50th Game for Blue

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) added two goals to the season total as Wellesley College field hockey shutout NEWMAC rival Smith College, 2-0, at Butler Stadium on Saturday. The Blue even up its NEWMAC record to 3-3, and improve to 5-9 overall. The win marks the 50th of Head Coach Callie Lekas' career at Wellesley.

Prior to the game, the Blue recognized the contributions of two seniors - Ceci Miller (Lewiston, Maine) and Sophia Sohigian (Wilmette, Ill.).

A minute into the second quarter a Wellesley penalty corner led to a foul that awarded the Blue a penalty stroke. Summers took the shot and pinpointed the ball into the lower right corner to put the hosts up 1-0. Smith sophomore Sam Sparling (Croton on Hudson, N.Y.) made a defensive save seconds before the penalty.

The 1-0 score held until late in the third period. A penalty insert from sophomore Annika Schermerhorn (Clifton Park, N.Y.) set up Summers for a rip into the left side of the cage.

First-year Iseul Park (Ann Arbor, Mich.) made seven stops for the Bears (7-8 Overall, 2-4 NEWMAC). Sophomore Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) had three saves in the shutout performance for the Blue.

Wellesley finished with a 16-7 edge in shots attempted. The Blue took 11 of the game's 12 penalty corners.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, October 21 in NEWMAC matchups. The Blue play a 7:00 PM game at Clark University. The Bears welcome nearby foe Mount Holyoke College for a 6:00 PM showdown.
