WELLESLEY, Mass. – A late fourth quarter goal from senior Eve Martineau (Greene, Maine) proved to be the difference in WPI's 1-0 NEWMAC victory against Wellesley College field hockey at Butler Stadium on Saturday.
With under three minutes remaining in a scoreless affair, a penalty corner set up grad student Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, Mass.), who swung a pass to Martineau. The senior then fired the ball into the lower right corner of the cage to give the Engineers (12-4 Overall, 7-1 NEWMAC) its lone goal.
Late in the third period, the Blue (5-11 Overall, 3-5 NEWMAC) had its best chance at a goal. Sophomore Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) fired a shot from the top of the circle. Martineau was the hero, making a key defensive save with the stick to stop the attempt.
Wellesley sophomore Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) made nine saves while only allowing one goal. WPI keeper Myles Lakin (Reading, Mass.) stopped the Blue's lone shot on goal.
WPI finished the game up 18-8 in shots taken. The Engineers applied offensive pressure, resulting in 10 penalty corners. The Blue attempted two penalty corners.
Next up, the Blue will host Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a non-conference game at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, October 28. The Engineers will conclude regular season play at home against Smith College on Saturday, November 1 at 12:00 PM.
