WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College field hockey earned a 2-1 non-conference victory over Saint Joseph's College of Maine on a chilly Tuesday night at Butler Stadium.
After nearly 49 minutes of scoreless action, the Monks (11-7) broke through when senior Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.), the team's leading goal scorer, ripped a shot from the left side into the far corner of the cage. The goal was Waryas' 21st of the season.
Wellesley (6-11) wasted little time to even the game at 1-1 by scoring 42 seconds later. Sophomore
Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.) was just inside the top right of the circle when the ball made its way through everyone and into the back of the cage.
With less than three minutes to play in regulation, Wellesley earned its 13th penalty corner of the contest. Sophomore
Gabi Chen (Mountain View, Calif.) took an initial shot that was saved by the Saint Joseph's goalkeeper. The ball bounced to sophomore
Annika Schermerhorn (Clifton Park, N.Y.) who deposited the eventual game-winner into the near side of the goal for the 2-1 advantage with 2:03 left on the clock.
Sophomore
Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) earned the win for Wellesley with three saves, while junior Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) had nine saves for the Monks.
Up next, Wellesley concludes the regular season with a NEWMAC game at MIT on Saturday, November 1. Saint Joseph's will host Simmons University in the GNAC Tournament Quarterfinal that same day.
